DEAN
COLLEGE OF science

Applications and nominations are invited for the position, Dean of the
College of Science at Weber State University, with an appointment
effective July 1, 2003. The position is one of seven Academic Deans
reporting directly to the Provost and represents an exciting opportunity
to help shape the future of a dynamic institution by working
collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and university
leadership.

COLLEGE
The College of Science offers bachelor's degrees in seven areas:
Botany, Chemistry, Geosciences, Mathematics, Microbiology, Physics, and
Zoology, as well as general education, preprofessional, and support
courses for the University. The college serves more than 1800 majors
with 93 faculty and staff. Additionally the Dean oversees Centers for
Bioremediation, Chemical Technology, Science and Mathematics Education,
the Museum of Natural Science, and Planetarium.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The dean is responsible for instructional, research, service,
accreditation and student activities related to the college and is an
advocate who articulates a strong vision for the sciences. The dean,
aided by chairpersons, makes recommendations on personnel matters,
allocates and manages budgets, provides leadership in curricular
matters, encourages teaching excellence and scholarly activity, fosters
strong and productive relationships with alumni, and advises and
supports chairs in their responsibilities. The dean is an advocate for
the college and represents it in administrative councils of the
university and within the community.

QUALIFICATIONS
The following are essential:

Earned doctorate in a scientific or mathematic discipline
Administrative experience at the department chair level or equivalent
A record of academic achievement meriting appointment as a full
Professor

Beyond these minima, the college seeks a dean who is committed to
promoting excellence in the recruitment and retention of faculty, staff,
and student populations; creating and fostering effective partnerships
with schools and the community; the application of technology to the
teaching learning process; and using a leadership approach of
participatory team management with chairs and faculty. He or she should
have highly developed communication skills and experience in the
development of grant and donor funding.

Weber State University is a comprehensive university founded in 1889.
Weber State University provides lifelong learning opportunities for a
diverse spectrum of learners both on and off the main campus,
capitalizing extensively on partnerships with private companies and
public agencies in the region. Over 18,000 students are enrolled in
associate, baccalaureate, and master's degree programs in the health
professions, business, education, technology, and liberal arts and
sciences. The university is located 35 miles north of Salt Lake City on
the western slopes of the Wasatch Mountains, which offer extensive
year-round outdoor recreational experiences.
