With all this discussion of the optics for an automotive mirror, may I
suggest a way to resolve all the various models proposed? ... take a laser
pointer, aim it at the mirror through the rear window of the car, and see
where the reflections are! Better still, bring a mirror into the classroom
and have the students do it as an exercise.
