Greetings. There is a new report published by the National Research Council
at the request of national lawmakers. Its original title was Scientific
Inquiry in Education and they changed it to Scientific Research in
Education, mainly due to the fact that there are many definitions of inquiry
floating around. The main basis of this report is to demonstrate how
educational research fits in with the bigger picture of scientific research.
It addresses a number of issues, including the public character of the
enterprise (educational research). It is published by the National Academy
Press and can be found on their website (www.nap.edu) or ordered through
them in the near future. It has been heard on the Hill that lawmakers are
using research, policy and practice in the same sentence, meaning that they
are beginning to make the connection. This document is meant to further
educate the political community. As with anything of this nature, there is
controversy involved. One last thing is that the Department of Education is
developing guidances for PIs along the lines of what is stated in this
report. Cheryl
