Work gives the picture of action of one system on another.

But redefining a word that already has a well-established technical meaning
is guaranteed to cause misunderstandings.

And the phrase "energy transfer" is misleading at best.

Huh?
Energy means energy.
Transfer means transfer.
Energy transfer means energy transfer.

Energy gets transferred from one cell in spacetime to another. That is
exactly what is required by the local conservation law. Anything else is
wrong.
