The one that I worked on was powered by 120V/24V AC and was embedded in
the wall. I don't know if the company designed a battery powered version
in later years. The limited battery energy prevented the use of fast IR
pulses and a power-hogging MPU chip (at least it did so when using the
chips available back in 1994).

The point of the MPU was to provide an adaptive sensor which could "learn"
the normal background changes caused by passersby, stall doors opening,
buildup of dirt on the window, etc. That way they could avoid any need
for adjustment by installers or readjustment over years of operation, and
also save water by triggering a flush only when actually needed.
