TEMPER was NITPICKING?

Hi,
Just a personal peeve/nitpicking. Temper

The general term used by metal workers and
metallurgist for temperature controlled
modification of the crystal structure of steel (
usually for strength or hardness) is heat treating
not tempering. After a bit of high carbon steel
is heated red hot and quenched in water (or oil)
it is usually very hard and brittle. The metal is
then TEMPERED by heating it to some modest
temperature ( a few 100 degree C) which is enough
to reduce the brittleness.

Most metal workers and metallurgist treat misuse
of the term TEMPER the way many on this list treat
the misuse of the term heat.

Thanks
Roger

After an hour of being exposed to these extreme temperatures, the steel
posts at the location of the fires lost their TEMPER and could no
longer support the weight of that part of the tower above the fire. The
top of the tower collapsed, and in the process gained enough KE to act
as a pile driver on the lower part of the tower.
