5. GORDON RESEARCH CONFERENCE ON PHYSICS RESEARCH AND EDUCATION

**QUANTUM MECHANICS**

June 9-14, 2002 at Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachusetts

Chair, Beth-Ann Thacker, Texas Tech University, batcam@spudhammer.phys.ttu.edu

Vice Chair, Harvey S. Leff, Cal Poly Pomona, hsleff@csupomona.edu

Vice Chair, David P. Jackson, Santa Clara University, jacksond@dickinson.edu

This is the second Gordon Research Conference (GRC) in a series of conferences that will focus on how research in physics and research in physics education can be used to improve the teaching of physics, primarily at the undergraduate level.

The first of these conferences, held in June 2000, focused on the teaching of thermal and statistical physics, and a theme issue of the American Journal of Physics was published on this topic in December 2000.

The focus of the 2002 conference is the teaching of Quantum Mechanics. Special attention will be given to areas of current research and technological interest that can be included in such courses, physics and chemistry education research on conceptual understanding of quantum mechanics, and innovative curricular materials and approaches. Examples of appropriate topics include lab experiments, computational projects, quantum physics at the introductory level, ways of incorporating modern developments and applications, and the integration of quantum mechanics and classical mechanics. The goal is to bring together workers who are active in research in quantum mechanics, researchers in the new field of physics education, and people who teach courses in quantum mechanics at the undergraduate level. A web site dedicated to this GRC is at URL http://physics.dickinson.edu/qm
