Experience. Waves are a new phenomenon and experience is the only way I
know to deal with it. Students and long springs or slinkies can try to
change the speed, and will if they are not careful about tension. Slinkie
races. Standing waves. A trip to the pool if you have one; Big splash and
little splash and stopwatches.
