Re: Fuel efficiency

Panzers to Neil!

Yes, I suspect so. The functions are the same.

P.s. The co. was SpaceKom; sold, I think, to Zemco.

I have a 1987 Cadillac with a mpg meter. It can be switched back and forth from instanteous mpg, to average mpg, to fuel used since last being reset, to the expected range. A friends corvette, don't
know the year, also has the same features. Don't know if this is a descendant of the one described below, but the idea is in the market.

Back in the 60's a Santa Barbara (CA) co. mfg'd an mpg computer. It was, obviously, an odometer divided by a flow meter. One of the partners told me they were selling it to GM for their high end
autos. Anyone ever see one in a car? He gave me one which I never had the time to install. Their first model was just a mechanical flow meter, which I did install in my VW bug. The flow meter was a
ball in a circular pipe that interrupted a 6 V. lamp's beam. The photo cell's output drove a mechanical counter.

The same people mfg'd the D & R turntable (very high end) and one of them was involved in a high custom feed back system that included the speakers. They made only a few of them, including one that
was a big hit at the national consumer electronics show that year. I could hear the difference when it was toggled!

Consumers Reports lists fuel efficiency for new passenger vehicles in its
annual automobile issue. However, fuel efficiency figures can be misleading
since usually only "miles per gallon" are reported. The important figure is
"passenger miles per gallon". Using this measure trains and buses are far
more efficient than passenger cars even though a passenger train may burn a
gallon of diesel fuel per mile.

You might try searching at:

http://www.eia.doe.gov/

I tried "fuel efficiency" as a search parameter and got several pages of
'hits'. Didn't immediately find what you want, but didn't look beyond the
first page of references.

From following earlier discussions, I know that some of you are well
informed about "transportation physics". Does anyone know a good source
for
fuel efficiency versus speed data for various types of vehicles, in either
tabular or graphical form?
