Mark, I don't see the point. Look in any college catalogue: There are
hundreds of majors that most HS students are not aware of. Further, a
prime point of college general ed requirements is to encourage students to
think about what field they might be interested in.

Do you propose that it is society's responsibility to promote actively all
of the many possible majors -- just to be sure that they all get their fair
share. Or are you saying that it is in the self interest of physics
instructors to promote a physics major so that faculty jobs are protected.

Somebody please help me understand all this.

It's hardly the responsibility of "society" but it seems to me to be
the responsibility of "physics" if we who are physicists want to see
to it that those women who might be drawn to that life have the
opportunity to find out about it.
