Re: green laser question

My recollection is that some non-linearity is necessary to produce a
higher harmonic, for example, 0.5 micron (green) from 1 micron (IR).
The role of mirrors is not clear to me.

Ludwik, you're thinking of a Nd:YAG laser. A YAG oscillator has an output of
about 1 micron. That output is usually not very useful, so it is often
frequency doubled or tripled to green or blue.

In the case of the HeNe, it's just a different atomic neon transition.
