surface of a metal sphere

One should be careful and this is perhaps what you meant when you say the
"can" has different geometry.

Its easy to devise gedanken situations where the charge in both on the inner
and outer surfaces of a conducting shell. A rather typical text problem
shows arrays of concentric conducting shells with net charges and asks one
to find E fields and charges on all the respective surfaces (utilizing
Gauss' law un-surprisingly enough)
