Re: Support position open in physics education

Dean....

The job qualifications enumerated below are very impressive
and it might be difficult to find anyone who has all of the the
background,
talent, and energy required. On the other hand, you might wish to
narrow the field somewhat by requiring the applicant to also
have been awarded a Nobel prize or two .

Director of Instructional Support
Department of Physics
Kansas State University

The Director of Instructional Support coordinates
activities which support faculty in the teaching of
all undergraduate physics courses. The position
involves administration, teaching, and research and
development in physics education. The Director is
responsible for working with faculty to assure an
appropriate laboratory experience for all students.
Responsibilities range from scheduling teachers for
courses to developing new and innovative
experiments. The Director oversees approximately 30
graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants and
one full-time employee.

The teaching load of the Director will primarily
involve one introductory course in physics or
astronomy per year.
The person in this position becomes a member of the
Department's Physics Education Research Group. As
part of this group he/she is expected to complete
research and development in the teaching and
learning of physics, to be actively involved in the
Group's activities, and to seek external funding for
research, development and the improvement of
teaching.

Candidates should have a strong background in
physics, knowledge of research in physics education,
the use of technology in teaching and an awareness
of the major issues facing large, public
universities as they attempt to meet the
instructional needs of today's students as well as
respond to both the results of research and economic
pressures.

Application, vita, and three letters of
recommendation should be sent to Professor James
Legg, Head, Department of Physics, 116 Cardwell
Hall, Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas
66506-2601 (Internet address: legg@ksu.edu).
Screening of applicants will commence April 24,
2000. Kansas State University is an Equal
Opportunity Employer and actively seeks diversity
among its employees.
