Re: Evolution in schools (was Re: Evolution...)

[snip]
...for my assertion that there is not always a teacher than can
do justice to the subject s/he is teaching.
Add to this the number of high schoolers who still need remedial Math
and English (forget about science), and I just don't see it happening.

Am I nuts here? I freely admit that I am not a high school teacher.
Who on this list is a high school teacher? What think you? I want to
know if I am full of baloney.

I'm a high school physics teacher with a Masters degree in physics. I've
also served as science chair in 4 different schools. I can testify that it
is hard to find qualified physics teachers. When you do find one, if (s)he
has too much experience, the administration will not be pleased.
Administrators prefer novices because of their place on the salary scale.

I cringe at the often made suggestion of moving physics to 9th. grade.
WHERE will we get the teachers? At present, physics is taken as an
elective, therefore fewer students and fewer teachers needed.
