The smell has varied according to where I live. I grew up in a very dry
town with hot summers (high 30's) in central BC. There was a very
distinctive smell that warned of an upcoming rain, and it was very
strong as the rain got going. I have tended to associate it with
stirring of dust. The same smell wasn't there when I lived in Vancouver
(much the same climate as Seattle), Ontario, or Nova Scotia, but we get
it sometimes here in Winnipeg where it is also very hot and dry quite
often in the summer but nowhere near as dusty as my hometown.
