Re: Howard Voss' Testimony

Herb,
You listed all the reasons why I left the PhD track (with a MS)
to get a second MS in Education and licensure in teaching. Also, my
kids will have the same schedule as me for vacations and I get summers
to work and supplement my income or get some extra education. Besides I
am done with school at 3:30 PM and could work another job or spend time
with my family. There are so many intangible advantages. Unforunately,
our society currently only recognizes the tangible ones (salary).
Actually, the priority is on materialistic items. I think the good
teachers are those that realize there will not be many tangible rewards.
They live for the one kid a year that thanks us for teaching them.
Teaching and industry work (or research work) require different
personalities. Teaching is not for everyone and our society is now
setting priorities that are opposite of those teachers have. That's my
theory.

I teach MS and HS science teachers as part of my job. Recruiting is
a tremendous problem due to salaries. Some teachers here in AZ will
start at $20k/yr, after 4-5 yrs of college. Many admire their own

would like to emulate them, but can't afford to pay the loans and bills
and
eat on the salary. A HS Chemistry teacher can start at 2X the $$
working
for industry here in AZ. Raytheon Missles sends buses up here to grab
all of our physics grads (they have the cruise missle contract)
starting at $40k, which is higher than I started here at NAU.

But does Raytheon also offer sick days, health insurance, sabbaticals,
paid pensions, lots of paid holidays including 10 days off at Xmas and
another 10
days at Easter? ....and what happens when Raytheon loses a big contract
and may not get another one for several weeks or months?
