Is there a recipe for a low grade transistor in this text?
If I recall, the Bell folks used a phosphor bronze wire
to probe the area of a bronze wire/germanium-slip diode
in their original transfer resistor point contact setup.

It was this kind of point contact germanium diode
that was detecting the microwave mix from magnetron
and klystron tubes in WWII radars. The point contact
lowered the series capacitance - the bane of detection at
microwave frequencies.
