Disclaimer: I've not done this experiment. I suggest you try Perlite,
which is white plastic foam pellets used for conditioning soil. Any garden
center or garden department of chain stores should have it, and it's not
expensive. Worth a try, and better than crushing styrofoam. It's also a
bit more uniform in pellet size than you'd likely get by crushing.
