2D description of 3D flight

Hi --

Recently there has been some discussion of the role of two-dimensional analysis, especially as applied to the lift and drag of wings.

I have written a note on the subject which can be found at
http://www.monmouth.com/~jsd/fly/2d.htm

Basically it says the 2D anaylsis gives a good description of lift in ordinary cases. It provides a sound understanding at a level of detail that suffices for most people. OTOH to describe induced drag, you need to understand what's going on at the wingtips, which requires going beyond the 2D model.

Cheers --- jsd
