|Too many folks get hung up on this because the good friar who numbered
|the years beginning with what he thought was Jesus' birth year was under
|the great handicap of having to use Roman numerals, in which there is no
|0, so he began counting with the year 1. The 1st century, therefore, had
|only 99 years.
Utter nonsense! No matter _how_ the numbering system began, it _did_ begin
with the number "1". It is inconceivable that anyone but a physicist (or
an even a nuttier mathematician) would begin counting the years with a zero.
Unquestionably, Larry is right: there is no question that the next century
begins in 2001!
AND it should be Y2k no matter what part of speech it is.
BTW, how could one insist on a "proper" numbering system and NOT use the
proper suffix!
OTOH, most people will use any excuse to get plastered, so will likely
celebrated both years as the new century. (:-)
