According to Noether's theorem, invariance of the Lagrangian under a
one-parameter transformation implies the existence of a conserved
quantity associated with the generator of the transformation. I await
David Bowman's detailed elucidation of this encapsulation.

BTW, if I'm not mistaken, Noether was a woman who (some claim) might have
gotten a Nobel had she been a man! Please, someone correct or verify
this (my memory is the second thing to be going!).
