Re: Required common programming language

Gary:
I routinely use VB3 and VB5 for program development, for both academic
purposes as well as for non-academic shareware. In my
opinion, VB is simply too complex a language for kids below high school
level and is probably beyond the average high school student as well.
I am not at all surprised that the language is unpopular. I don't know
what language to suggest; for that matter, I am not convinced that
programming before high school, and then only as an elective, makes sense
anyway.

Has anyone experience with Visual Basic as a required language for
many grade levels? We use it here from 6th to 12th grade, but I'm
not convinced that it's a good thing. We have a two day a week tech
course in which kids do both project work, and some programming, but
in fact the visual basic doesn't seem to be very popular with them.
