In spite of appearances, the 'net is _not_ the next best thing to
instantaneous communication.  Messages are shunted from site to site by
what approaches a random walk, especially when  when there's lot's of
traffic - things can take a long time to get to their destination.
Unfortunately, the frustration of waiting often leads to multiple
transmissions, which further clogs the system.
