Hi All,

Perhaps the emf in a circuit can be defined as the energy per unit charge
transformed from some other form of energy to electrostatic potential
energy or vice versa. The exception would be that if electrostatic
potential energy is dissipated (transformed into thermal energy) the
energy dissipated per unit charge is not considered to be an emf.

By electrostatic potential energy I mean the associated with a charge
configuration.
