I take the view that the summation of differences is a method of superior
power to the ordinary calculus.
It is particularly helpful in dynamics problems.
It is not outrageously beyond the comprehension of a class of
ten-year-olds, and may be applied to unsmooth functions of arbitrary
complexity.

I found it amusing to read in Chandrasekhar's Stellar Structure that when
his (considerable) analytical resource was exhausted, he mentioned with
resignation that of course numerical integration would be needed here....
