HELP ! Send, Receive, DownLoad Files

Hi Physics Phriends,

PROBLEM 1

After successfully decoding and viewing Donald Simanek's beautiful Leyden
Jar picture which he posted as a binary coded Text file on Phys-list and
Physhare, I decided to have a student type up the mapping for the Einstein
Domino Mosaic so that I could post it for those who are interested (I've
mailed out at least a dozen such mappings). This mapping was done with
ClarisWorks, saved as a PICT file, converted to a GIF file by Graphics
Converter and encoded by UULite 3.0 . The encoded text file even looked
like Donald's file. However, I have been unsuccessful in e-mailing this to
myself and decoding it for viewing. UULite decodes it to a MS Word
document and when opened, jibberish!!! I'm obviously doing something wrong
and am at the point of needing suggestions. Please respond if you can help
me. Thanks.

PROBLEM 2

After successfully putting the Einstein Red Eye picture on one of my
student's homepage for your viewing pleasure (many positive responses), I
thought I would put my Macintosh Voyager II Hale-Bopp files on his IBM
based homepage for you to download if interested (I've sent out over 20
sets of files to private requests in the last three weeks). But we can't
get it to work.

When the Mac files are put on his IBM hard drive, IBM ZIPPED and downloaded
onto my Mac IIsi and Mac UNZIPPED, we get a document which is the exact
size in bytes as the orginal but is not recognized by the Voyager II
program (or any other).

When the Mac files are MAC ZIPPED on my computer, put on his IBM based
homepage, and then downloaded onto my Mac and MAC UNZIPPED, we get a
Voyager II file but when we try to open it, we get an Unable to Read Data
message. It seems as though we are close but no cigar. Can anyone help us
out here ??

PROBLEM 3

Recently, David Simmons posted the following:

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.

So far I have been unable to read and/or view these files. Do I understand
correctly that I have to have some special software to decode these as was
mentioned to Ludwik Kowalski ??

Am I the only one who can not read the last part of the message posted by
Dan MacIsaac on February 1? I assume it is a binary coded file. What should
I do to read it on my Macintosh? Ludwik Kowalski

It is a typical Microsoft "feature" -- software that defaults to sending
a proprietary format that is not readable by any other software. In this
particular case, it is the proprietary format for MS Exchange (or the
latest name-of-the-week, as they keep changing it). If the Exchange client
has been ported to Mac-OS, you can read it by purchasing a copy. If it
hasn't, it is merely binary bloat for you as it is for everyone else not
using that Microsoft product.

FINALLY, PROBLEM 4 (the one you can not help me with)

Why do I not ask our computer technology people here at DHS to help me? You
ask. Surely you joke. They have so many ways of saying no without having
to admit that they have no clue as to what you are talking about or want
done. Here's the latest response to my request for using the school's
homepage for the Einstein picture and the Voyager II files. A new way to
say NO.

Drt.
We are currently under review on the procedures for the District
Home page. I will bring the topic up again at the District Tech Meeting
next month.

Barry

Please don't tell on me although it wouldn't really matter since I am
retiring in 3 semesters.

PS: Does anyone know how to hack their way behind the scenes of Menu Master
Mac? We can't download *nothin'* on our PowerMacs (such as Starry Night)
because they are all protected from the students and the teachers by Menu
Master Mac.

PPS: If you work for Menu Master Mac, I'm just kidding.

bye, DiRT
