This is probably "Lasers, Phasers, and Ion Ray Guns". I can't find my
copy, but I think the publisher is "Amazing Devices"

The "Ion wand" is a high voltage power supply with a needle on the end.
It emits charged air in a stream, and will charge up a distant target.
Identical effects can be had by taping a bent paperclip to a Vandegraff
machine.

The "subsonic" gun is actually a smokering generator, but powered by a
loudspeaker for continuous ring-vortex generation. I don't remember
seeing this in the above book. I have exactly this project as a
suggestion on my webpage under "Hoaxes & Practical Jokes," titled "Stink
beam generator", since invisible streams of stench can be sent to a
distant target via trains of small smoke rings! ;)
