Re: semesters

I've been a student under both quarters and semesters
and have taught semester. I strongly prefer quarters. You simply can't
cover in 1 year under semesters, what you can cover in 1 year under
quarters. Roughly one standard quarter course = one standard semester
course.

I too don't recommend it. I had my intro physics year under the quarter
system and consider my experience to be all the better for it.

Joel, how do you figure a 15 or 16 week semester is equivalent to a 10 week
quarter?
I also have been a student and taught under both systems. Our 15 week
semester is followed by a one week final exam period. Two semesters equal 30
weeks of teaching.

I was also a student and taught under both the quarter and semester systems.
Three ten week quarters also equal 30 weeks of instruction. I found that the
semester system broke up the course in a more "standard" unit. (A course
that has been traditionally taught as a 3 semester credit course either is
trimmed to fit a 3 quarter credit course or is spread out to a two quarter
course of 6 credits.)
