TENURE-TRACK FACULTY POSITION
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA


The Department of Physics at the University of South Alabama
invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Physics
starting September 1, 1997. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D.
in Physics and must show evidence of excellence in teaching and
research. Post-doctoral experience is desirable. He/she will be
expected to conduct experimental research in atomic, molecular, optical,
medical, environmental, or condensed matter physics; opportunities exist
for collaboration with departmental faculty in some of the areas of
research listed. Teaching duties will include a wide spectrum of
undergraduate lecture and laboratory courses. The participation of
undergraduate students in research is actively encouraged.
The University of South Alabama is a comprehensive,
state-supported institution with more than 12,000 students. Currently,
the Physics department has six full-time permanent faculty and offers the
B.S. degree in Physics. Research facilities on campus include a 150 kV
accelerator, x-ray, molecular spectroscopy, and optical laboratories.
There is also a High Energy Physics research program active in
experiments at Fermilab. Departmental computing facilities include
several Sun SPARCstations connected to the Internet and a number of
microcomputers. A Cray C90 is also available through the Alabama
Supercomputer Network.

curriculum vitae, research plan, statement of teaching philosophy, and
have at least three letters of reference and copies of undergraduate and
graduate transcripts sent to Chair, Search Committee, Department of
Physics, University of South Alabama, Mobile, AL 36688, on or before
January 31, 1997. Before an on-campus interview can occur, official
transcripts sent directly from all of the candidate's universities, three
letters of recommendation sent directly from the respective references,
and a completed University of South Alabama Biographical Data Form will
