classroom response systems

I know of two systems: ClassTalk (as mentioned earlier Eric Mazure is
using it. See also the reprint of a posting to phys-l of 15 Feb, '96) and
a system in use by Ray Burnstein and Leon Lederman at Ill. Inst. of Tech.

Ray A. Burnstein (312)-567-3375
Ill. Inst. of Technology
Chicago, IL 60616-3793

The system used by Burnstein is wireless (uses rf) and works with windows.
Ray presented a Poster Paper and paper BJ10 at the summer meeting. This
system allows only numerical responses, but I really like the fact that it
is wireless! ClassTalk is a wired system which can use any of several
units at the student end (various "palmtop" calculators) and allows the
display of questions on the student's unit as well as some alpha-numeric
response from the students.

Subject: Classtalk article available

The Physics Education Research Group at UMass-Amherst will be publishing
an article in the Journal of Computing in Higher Education, Vol. 7, pp.
3-47, (1996), on our experiences teaching introductory physics using the
classroom communication system, Classtalk. Classtalk is a combination of
software and hardware that allows the presentation of problems for
students to work on collaboratively, the electronic collection of
answers, and the display of a histogram of students' answers, among other
things. Classtalk is designed to encourage active learning in lecture
courses. The aforementioned article recounts our experiences using
Classtalk to teach four different introductory courses to both physics
majors and non-science majors.

Those of you interested in the article can access it at our Web site:

or you may go directly to the Classtalk section by using the following

A Classroom Communication System for Active Learning."
