Joel,

I think we are closer than you realize. I disagree with Jim on
two counts. Under no circumstance would I confound the concepts
by saying (as Flanders and Swan do in their song, and Jim
reiterates) "Heat is work". I am also happy with "energy flow"
since energy is locally conserved on a macroscopic scale, the
scale appropriate to classical thermodynamics. Jim and I both
use the term "heat transfer" but not "heat flow".
