Unsolicited testimonial--"Powerful Ideas. . "

Earlier this summer, we did a course for 17 inservice elementary school
teachers using the first three units of the "Powerful Ideas in Physical
Science" materials published by the AAPT. It was successful beyond my
expectations! I haven't had such enthusiastic student participation since
I left high school teaching thirty years ago, and they actually discovered
the principles they were supposed to----. These were K-6 teachers who all
expressed a good deal of "physics anxiety" when they first arrived. We
met five hours a day for three weeks (exhausting, to be sure) and I was the
official instructor but also had the science ed specialist from our Ed. Dpt.
and one of the local jr. hi physical science teachers as assistants. I am
really, really pleased at how well the program went. All the students gave
it rave reviews. I was quite apprehensive myself before it started, as I
have had very little concrete experience with "learning by discovery" so it
was great to have such a rewarding initial experience. Thanks very much to
the people who developed the materials!
