RE: Rossby waves

Hi all-
This discussion has been tantalizing me because I remember the
name, but I can't quite place the face. Rossby waves are latecomers.
The original reference seems to be J. of Marine Research 2(1939)38.
Thus, they are not in Lamb, or any of the classical texts. I suspect
that they are in Eckart's book, but my copy has long gone astray. The
discussion that I finally found is in
Ablowitz and Segur, "Solitons and the Inverse Scattering Transform"
(Siam 1981). A number of papers in the last 2 decades have discussed
the great red spot on Jupiter as a possible "solitary" Rossby waves.
Is there a standard text or monograph that deals with Rossby
waves?
Regards,
Jack
