There is a problem with science courses for education majors that
attempt to integrate "science methods" with "science content". If the
"science methods" format dominates, the students are taught as if they
were the students they will be teaching and the content becomes so
diluted that they are unable to make meaningful connections when they
teach their lessons later. I believe that this is the reason that so
many hands-on science activities become just activities at the elementary
level. Education majors need real science courses to give them the
necessary background to teach hands-on science effectively.
