I missed the opportunity to mention a recent intriguing theory concerning the varying density of water and the Bermuda triangle. An explanation for the stories of ships sinking in that vicinity goes like this.

There are Methane sources on the local seabed due to vegetable decay deposits. Episodes of outgassing from the seabed might reduce the density of the seawater to such a level that a passing vessels's weight exceeds the foaming water's reduced displacement, so sinking it in the flume.
