If a stellar yardstick were visible in your shots, it would ease your concerns about the variability of the zoom. How helpful if two stars were also visible in the field of view of the various shots!

True, but not exhibited. The horizon shot was taken at a time before dusk when only an object like Venus might have also been visible (and it was not). the zenith shot suffers the same fate as many astronomical shots: the brightness of the moon (it was full, by the way) is so significantly different than other stellar objects that to photograph both simultaneously with appropriate exposures is impossible.
