The scientist was Thomas Gold, an astrophysicist who is most famous for proving that the source of the Crab Nebula light was a neutron star at its core. I believe he got the Swedes to bore a deep hole look for this gas. It came to naught.
We scientists can get on shaky ground when we go beyond our expertise, but some times it pays off. It was a meteorologist that proposed continental drift.
