Re: [Phys-l] Evidently the Church didn't learn from Galileo.

Apparently Polish science education is not much better than that of the US
as the following quote from the Guardian article shows.

"In 1996, in what was seen as a capitulation to scientific orthodoxy, John
Paul II said Darwin's theories were "more than a hypothesis"."

Apparently the difference between a theory and a hypothesis was not
understood.

Of course we shall see what the outcome of this matter will be. At present
the Jesuits will probably fight any attempt to make a pro ID statement.
Probably most of the scientists who are priests are Jesuits. The pro
evolution stance of the RC church has deep roots. Also basically the Pope
has traditionally said little about the matter. Traditionally evolution has
been taught in the scientific fashion in Catholic schools, by nuns no less.
Any anti statements that emanate from Rome will probably be ignored by the
majority of the RC church members. A recent poll found that among religious
groups the support for evolution was the highest in Catholics.
