Being originally from California and now living in NC, I know that
Californians will scoff at anything less than a 5, but in this part
of the world, anything over 1 qualifies. :-)

However, there have been some pretty good shakers in this area. There
were two in the 19th century that did quite a bit of damage in
Charleston, SC (both were in the 6-7 range, IIRC, and the strongest
earthquake in the lower 48 was in 1811 in New Madrid, MO--8.7,
fortunately, in those days Missouri was sparsely populated).
