very few laymen have a clue as to what Hubble did to
get his name stuck on the thing.

Many will claim he discovered that the universe is expanding. He did not;
Vesto Slipher did so much earlier, publishing in 1914 (I think) in time for
Einstein to remove the cosmological constant from his theory of general
relativity before it was tested by Eddington et al, in 1919. Had the
discovery waited for Hubble in the twenties then Einstein would heve been
denied his triumph. As it was he had the prediction of a nonstatic universe
(sans cosmological constant) before Slipher's result became well-known.
