Roger that. Near as I can tell, American (the spoken language) has about
18 separate vowels, including at least six separate sounds for the letter
"o" alone. Southern Americans use all letters as vowels as the situation
suits them. Canadians apparantly function with fewer than the standard 6
vowels; Scots use only 2 or maybe 3.

Perhaps I could write a Canadian-American dictionary, or start writing my
"o" with umlauts and other pronunciation guides...

Miscellaneous comment. The military changed from the Able, Baker, Charlie,
Dog, Easy etc. to Alpha etc. supposedly because our NATO partners find long
vowelsin the older phonetic alphabet rather difficult to understand, hence the
softer sounds of the "new" alphabet.
