Re: what to call litle "g"

David Bowman says:

I personally prefer the phrase "surface gravity" (which is standard in
planetary science) for the scalar value of g.

Spin-off question: In planetary science, is 'g' commonly used for the
gravitational field strength at the surface whatever planet is under
discussion? If I'm talking about a space probe lifting off from Mars,
would 'g' be used? Or 'g(sub)M' (i.e. M for Mars)? Or is 'g' reserved for
the Earth?
