Your skepticism is well founded. The book is just wrong.
A 100 meter sphere is not stable at low temperatures. Obviously not.
Room temperature is the same as zero temperature as far as nuclear processes are concerned.
If you managed to assemble a 100 meter sphere of uranium, it would go from zero kelvin
to a million kelvin in less than a microsecond.
That's limited by propagation at the speed of light.
