Re: [Phys-L] astronomy binocular buying advice

We’re thinking about buying a classroom set of binoculars for our general education beginning astronomy class, but I’m not an expert in what features to shop for.

There seem to be contradictory opinions about size (the “giant” ones seem popular these days, but are they too heavy?). Some guides recommend 7x50 or 9x63 as the best so we don’t have to buy tripods too.

Are image-stabilizing binoculars for astronomy worth the extra money?

Sometimes the vendors aren’t much help: too many models to choose from, and why are the “better” models cheaper?

We do have fairly dark skies where I teach.

Any guidance for buying a classroom set of astronomy binoculars?

Thanks,
Larry
