Re: [Phys-L] Fw: Technical questions.

Gmail sends the mail to spam and this is what gmail says:

*Why is this message in Spam?* It has a from address in yahoo.com but has
failed yahoo.com's required tests for authentication.

Thanks a lot to all for your helpful answers. Now I have already received
the official response from Phys-L.org with some additional info. Just in
case, I am forwarding it to the List.

Hello Moses,

I apologize for not replying sooner. Currently I'm on vacation in a
remote location in Maine and gained internet >access this morning.

1) Why did I start receiving this message? Had I violated any rules of
the list?

You have not violated any rules of the list. It is an indication that
your domain, yahoo.com, is not accepting certain >messages.

2) What does "excessive bounces" mean? In my understanding, the message
bounces if the >>email address is wrong. This cannot be the case here since
my messages to the List were just >>responses to the given address.

A quick look at the log files show that Yahoo.com is not accepting
particular messages from the list based upon >their determination that they
cannot verify the original sender's domain being valid. This has nothing to
do with the >Phys-l list itself. What the list does see is it cannot
deliver those messages after many attempts and sends you the >message you
received automatically.

It appears that the non-deliverable messages took your bounce number
above 5 once again. You may read more >about the automatic bounce
processing of the list here: http://web.mit.edu/lists/mailman/bounce.html

I may make a change to the way the list handles the "From: " field in
messages sent from the list to individual users >to lessen the occurrence
of these "errors". However, this is not something I wish to do with spotty
access to the list.

3) Usually the sender gets automatically notified of any bounce of
his/her message, with the reason for the bounce. I had never got any such
individual notifications before the cited warning.

Since these bounces are a return of a message being delivered to your
account but failing to succeed, you should >not receive any such
notification.

4) Were my bounced messages still received by all the List members or
were they directed back >>to me alone?

I believe all messages sent by you from your yahoo.com account have been
received by all list members. You >may verify this yourself by comparing
messages you sent to those found in the archives: www.phys-l.org/archives.

Please feel free to reply to this email address (phydocmarko@gmail.com)
in the case you have other questions or >find some messages sent by you
have not appeared in the archives.

Sincerely,
Mark Kimball, Administrator
