In the late 1970s memory chips started to exhibit random soft errors. An investigation in IBM showed the source to be radioactive decay in lead present in chip pads (i.e., very close to the cells themselves). IBM identified some sources of low radiation lead at those days and for quite some time zealously protected it sources from competition. Seems like new sources are available now.

Lead is recycled quite aggressively.
