Re: [Phys-L] HS astro projects

Take a look at Galaxy Zoo, http://www.galaxyzoo.org They usually have astronomy projects going on in which they use on-line volunteers to help. For example, between 2009 and 2012 they had people searching Hubble photos for supernovas in order to build a set of SN characteristics to build a better computer search algorithm. For some strange reason, you have to teach a computer in high detail how to sift through digital data to find patterns that to humans look like bright spots that might be supernova.

Subject: [Phys-L] HS astro projects

Our seniors do independent projects the last 5 weeks of their final year (e.g.,
producing a CD, internship at law office, building something, etc.) A student
interested in astronomy asked me for some ideas. I said I was not sure what
she could do at the high school level. Can't just do "research" online about a
topic, write a paper, etc.

I mentioned the SETI project and hooking your computer in to check for
signals while on sleep mode. Not sure this project would be "approved."
Also not sure what the student could present at the end.

Does anyone know of "astronomy projects" a senior student could
investigate at the high school level?
