That's a good question. There were a number of factors that contributed
to confusion about this.

Steps have been taken to extirpate the worst sources of confusion. As
of now, if you google "Phys-L" it will point you to http://www.phys-l.org/
... which is the right answer.

Both the subscription interface and the archives can be reached via
http://www.phys-l.org/

This is the recommended URL. It should remain correct for the foreseeable
future.

I have a system monitor (nagios). It is trained to watch this service
(among others). If phys-l were to go offline, I would be notified within
minutes.

You can help improve things. If you have control over a personal or
institutional website that links to an old address for phys-l, please
update your links. They confuse people ... and confuse the googlebot.

You can google your site for references to "carnot.physics.buffalo" or
to "physicsed.buffalostate.edu/phys-l‎". For example, replace the site
(av8n.com) in the following URL with your site:
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22carnot.physics.buffalo%22+OR+%22physicsed.buffalostate.edu%2Fphys-l%22+site%3Aav8n.com

If you find any, please update the hostname. The structure of the current
site parallels the structure of the old sites, so all you need to change is
the hostname.
