I think the US's problem is it was a frontier state. Frontier values are our problem. If one didn't like submitting to what the community thought was its good, one could move further west. A community works only if its members willingly submit to the common good -- Nazism worked and so did British socialism.

So, I think the libertarians are retro.

p.s. I curious how the Catholicism of the the other frontier states modified their development.
