Actually, one of the things I've started doing is to use collaborative
tests as a teaching tool. I call them "open friend" quizzes. The
questions are harder than I would give them individually. They can work
in groups of up to three, and can use any reference they want, including
me. (Though I follow a rule that requires me to answer every question
with a question.)

I find that my students learn (i.e., internalize) more from one of these
"open friend" quizzes than from several days of lecture, discussion and
homework.

This sort of discussion is one of the types of questions I like to ask
on an "open friend" quiz.
